Every week in the village of Speranza begins with the same sacred ritual: the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the house. As Aswaganda, my Red cat, stretches gracefully in the morning sun and Toe, my Maine Coon, watches me with his wise eyes, I know the day is ready to reveal its secrets, big or small.
My life as a doctor in this small hill town is a constant balance between science and poetry. Mornings are for patients with common ailments and stories to be heard, but in the afternoon, as the sun begins to set, my mind shifts to other kinds of investigations.
Evenings at The Purring Page
The beating heart of my evenings is the local book club, The Purring Page. Located in an old bookstore that smells of paper and stories, this is where the most brilliant and curious minds of Speranza gather. Our favorite genre? Cozy Murders, of course—small crimes that disrupt the village’s tranquility.
Every Wednesday, while enjoying a glass of local white wine and savoring the artisanal cheeses Speranza is famous for, we discuss the intricate plots and hidden secrets within the pages. The book of the week might just hold the key to solving the minor crime of the month, like the case of the mysterious sabotage of Mr. Albrecht’s cuckoo clocks or the disappearance of the sharpest cheese knife in town.
The Hidden Treasures of Speranza
Speranza is a crossroads of unique characters who make it so special. Recently, a renowned chef from Milan arrived, drawn by our local produce, and a retired detective from London, who now loves to study cuckoo clocks. Both, whether they know it or not, are part of our unofficial investigation.
When I’m not at the book club, my evenings transform into an ode to tradition. White wine pairs perfectly with my grandmother’s cooking—homemade pasta, vegetables from her garden, and recipes only she knows. After dinner, my nightly routine is wrapped in comfort. In the winter, there is the crackling of the fireplace that warms the soul while Toe curls up on my lap, purring at full volume. In the summer, the outdoor fire pit becomes the gathering spot. The magic lights up with the sky tinged in orange, pink, and purple—a sunset that promises a new beginning every night.
As Aswaganda hunts for moths and night falls on Speranza, I reflect on the stories I have listened to, the investigations we have conducted, and the delicacies I have tasted. My heart fills with gratitude for this quiet life full of surprises. Every night, before sleeping, I leave the door open for the ancient herbs that scent the village and for the new beginnings that the coming day will bring.
